About the Name, Casa del Azahar Azahar is an Arabic word, commonly used in Spanish for orange blossom. The house’s name came from the naranja agria tree (sour orange tree) which lives at the edge of the pool. As the house was in renovation, one of the owners was pressured to cut down the tree – “the leaves!” , “the roots!”, etc. However, she felt an ancient orange tree was a precious gift, and refused to let it be cut. Upon her return from a cold New York winter, she was rewarded by the scent of orange blossom -- “El Azahar” -- wafting though the house. The tree has recently been attacked by termites, but survived that too, and is now happily producing naranjas which make a wonderful marinade for meat or fish, or a refreshing drink. Layout The downstairs features an entry-way, library, living room, kitchen, dining room and one bedroom. The bedroom connects to the library with a Scandinavian pull-out bed, ideal for families with children. The top floor has two bedrooms, each with its own terrace, and allows a sense of privacy from the bedroom below, perfect for an extended family, two families, or two couples. Families and children The house has been designed with both couples and families in mind. While many houses in the center of Merida don’t welcome children, the owners’ have found that the wealth of music, family-oriented events, ice cream flavors, security, vicinity to the beach and cenotes, as well as the Meridanos love of children, has made the city a magical place for their own daughter – and something they wanted to share with other families. Local playthings and beach toys are left out for renters with families, and the owners can recommend a wonderful babysitter for parents who would like a chance to explore the city on their own in the evening. |
